This hypothesis was also ruled out as the particles were neither acidic nor of volcanic origin, but were spores.

A study has been published showing a correlation between historic reports of colored rains and of meteors; the author of the paper, Patrick McCafferty, stated that sixty of these events (colored rain), or 36 %, were linked to meteoritic or cometary activity.
